Development of exchange rate forecasting models for
Fiji and Pacific Island Countries (PICs), (Ahmed, S; Khan, MGM, Biman Prasad) Ongoing, $41620, USP, Fiji,
2012. Abstract: The research team expects to develop currency exchange rate
neural network (NN) forecast models for the Pacific Island Countries (PICs)
against all major trading currencies. In particular, the exchange rate forecast
model for the Fiji dollar is under development. We propose to investigate those
factors that trigger fluctuation in the exchange rate. Intended research
outcomes are the exchange rate forecast model, software for exchange rate
prediction, journal article, and contribution to refereed conference proceeding
in addition to multivariate forecasting software for the exchange rate in the
PICs.

Development of a Methodology to Measure Academic
Program outcome and gap analysis, (Ahmed,
S.; Pathak, R. D.; Zwikael, O, Singh, G) Ongoing- $15850, USP, Fiji,
2011. Abstract: The proposed research develops a methodology that combines
group consensus and multi-criteria objectives in assessing program outcome and
course impact on MBA program goal. The research sets up methods to map program
effectiveness and program outcome with the help of Quality Function Deployment
(QFD) and analytical hierarchical decision process (AHP). At the MBA, program
level, various components of course information, learning outcome, and program
goals need evaluation using a QFD matrix. To factorize the impact of courses on
the program, a multi-criteria model consolidates program outcome as functional
determinants by qualitative and quantitative measures. The information
attributes require pair-wise comparisons by AHP methodology as the functional
determinants from the survey, expert opinion, and Delphi methods. A combined
hierarchical QFD and AHP analysis measure course impact on the program and
identify the possible gap in program outcome. The solution to this problem is
an important contribution to the program design and program restructuring
efforts. Such methodologies are vital to the quality enhancement mechanism in
curriculum design.
5)
MBA tracer study 2011, (Ahmed, S.; Pathak, R. D.; Darrow, A.; McMaster, J.; Singh, G.)
Ongoing, $ 40,000; USP, Fiji, 2011. Abstract - The MBA tracer study is
planned to understand, the conditions under which the MBA graduates are
employed, their aspirations if matched, the extent to which the career goals
are realized, return on education investment in various forms including
financial and hierarchical accomplishment, and explore the employers'
expectations of graduates, relevance, rigor, and quality of the program in the
region. The racer study further evaluates facilities, the state of the art management
skills demand in the pacific island countries for its continuous growth and
advancement of a knowledge-based economy in the PICs. Both field sampling and
exhaustive surveys are necessary to collect data from various industries and
countries where MBA graduates work since the inception of the MBA program in
1995. The study further supports GSB's accreditation efforts and the quality of
the business education program. Reports, recommendations for the GSB, journal
articles, and conference papers are the expected outcome of this project.

Improving project management capabilities of projects
in the Pacific: A Case Study of the Fiji Islands, [as co-investigator] (Professor R. D. Pathak, (GSB), Dr. Ofer
Zwikael (ANU), Professor Shamsuddin Ahmed (GSB), Ms. Suwastika Naidu (SMPA) and
Associate Professor Gurmeet Singh (SMPA).) Ongoing, $ 38,000; USP, Fiji,
2012. Abstract: The project management study aims to improve the project
management capabilities of projects in the Pacific and particularly in the Fiji
Islands. The motivation for this research is to better use the limited
resources dedicated to the execution of projects in the Pacific to ensure more
of these investments are better utilized. This project can assist Pacific
economies to grow faster by identifying the project management capabilities and
training needs.

(Project no. 40-4-11-20/02) Title: Seasonal Peak
Electric Load Demand, $6000, UAEU, 2002. Synopsis: The
motivation for accurate forecast lies in electricity as a trading commodity
that cannot be stored. The estimate of the future demand is necessary for the
generation of power and cost-effective operation of the power plant. If the
forecast load is higher than the actual load, power-generating units will be
needlessly activated. If, on the other hand, the forecast is too low, the
deficit has to be made up through the operation of small standby power units
that can be brought online relatively quickly. It is expensive to run such
small units compared to large generating units. However, large generating units
take more than a day to go online from a cold state. Therefore, they cannot be
used to respond to sudden load changes in real-time. The main objective of
electrical load forecasting is to predict the loads ahead of time. This is
necessary for the operational planning of a power system. Electric power
forecasting application is developed for power plants.

(Project no. 02-03-4-11/03) completed. To Promote Heritage/Ecotourism with e-Portal,
$6500, UAEU, 2003, Aim: Sequencing of a Tourism Portal Navigation Tool
Functionality and digital economy (Keywords: echo Tourism, Heritage tourism,
Portal web pages, Web page sequence, e-commerce, Digital economy) Abstract:
Portals play a vital role in the financial wellbeing of an industry. The
question is how to ensure that the heritage tourism portals are designed in a
way that enhances their efficiency by reducing the e-tourism information access
time. Design of web page sequence and navigation tools require to maximize
portal access rate. The layering of the navigation tools should ensure that
related functionalities are grouped next to each other so that the users of the
portal can easily retrieve information in an orderly and timely manner. Survey
data provides web user preferences. Using statistical methods, information is
processed to develop heritage tourism web portal page sequence and addresses
indicators of quality measured by the response time, throughput, reliability,
and availability.
10)
(Project no. 04-03-4-11/04), Completed. What makes the hospitality industry
competitive? $6000, UAEU, 2004. Synopsis: This
research for the tourism service industry sets out to investigate how, and to
what extent, each of the primary causative criteria, such as travel
destination, age, tourist background, tourist origin, budget, attractions,
activates, class, type of hotels, and other factors, are related to the other.
The project also categorizes which groups of hotel occupancy factors are
associated on a factorial level. The analysis explores and detects underlying
relationships among the hotel occupancy rates which are suggestive of the
existence of inter-correlations between the factors; consequently, the analysis suggests how to improve the hotel occupancy
rates. The study categorizes the factors responsible for the occupancy rate.
The research aims to suggest how to design an efficient portal using feedback
from the tourist for e-tourism and e-commerce.

Supply Chain Logistic Planning with Spatial Routing
Scheme: Central Asia, KIMEP, 2006, KIMEP research fund $1000, Synopsis: The research is supported

plan. Using a city map the distribution plan is graphically generated to show
how to design the routing plan.

Title: Healthcare supply chain quality assessment and
healthcare facility design, American University of the Middle East, in
affiliation with Purdue University. ($7300) Kuwait, 2009. (Keywords:
Healthcare, wellbeing, Quality management, Process Analysis, Patient care
management) Abstract: The focus of the study is to see how critical
resources influence hospital quality management in healthcare organizations. An
exploratory study is proposed to study critical factors that affect the role of
the physician, management, customer-friendly services, deployment of resources,
and cost implications in healthcare institutions. The study provides an
understanding of resource management in healthcare quality planning. Due to
high variability common in healthcare and occurrences of errors visible in
different health care institutions, basic principles of process management
exhibit challenges. The study shows the degrees of service improvement about
resource deployment.
